Dear BV Families and Staff, As we start our fourth week of school, we have had to make changes to our 2020-2021 District Calendar. Please note some changes happening soon below and click on the link for the entire year’s calendar: Updated 20-21 BV Calendar. There will be a School Improvement Day on Thursday, September 24th. Students will be served breakfast and will be dismissed at 11:00am. No lunch will be served. This day was on the original 20-21 Calendar and was removed, as the administration was planning for Covid related situations. The administration has now decided to add the School Improvement Day back to the calendar. Also, there will be a Remote Planning Day on Wednesday, October 14th. No meals will be served. Students in grades PK-11 will not attend school that day and no remote learning will be assigned. All seniors will be required to attend in-person at BVHS to take the state-mandated SAT assessment; any juniors who have signed up to take the PSAT-NMSQT test will also need to attend in-person. Seniors and Juniors, please watch for an email with more information about testing. Parent Teacher Conferences are coming up on October 14th and 15th. We will send more information out at a later date as to how these conferences will be held to follow current guidance from the State. Please contact your student’s building with questions. Dear Parents, We have recently received guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education Nutrition Department informing us that all enrolled students will be eligible for free meals until December 31, 2020. The free meals begin September 1, 2020. (If your child was previously charged, those charges will be reversed for meals served on September 1st and 2nd.) Students in Kindergarten through 8th grade, who are attending in person, will be asked for daily meal counts at their building. Families that have chosen Remote Learning will continue to receive emails that contain a food order form. The High School Thunder and Lightning families will also continue to receive emails that contain their food order form. We appreciate your flexibility as we work through these continuing changes. In conjunction with the board-approved Return to Learn Plan and fall registration, the administrative team had hoped to send out a form today to give parents the opportunity to choose between the in-person learning plan or full-time remote learning plan. However, the Illinois State Board of Education released a 103-page update of school recommendations yesterday, which will need to be closely reviewed and considered. Therefore, we have decided to send out the "Parent Selection" form next week along with an FAQ to assist families with their selections and respond to concerns shared in the community survey emailed earlier this week. To correspond with this delay, we will extend the deadline to opt into full remote learning beyond the original July 31st deadline to August 5th.

Dear BV Parents/Guardians, While we are still working to determine the circumstances for the beginning of the school year, we would like to help facilitate the registration process to ensure it goes as smoothly as possible. Online registration for the 20/21 school year began on July 9th and Bureau Valley CUSD #340 is still strongly recommending online registration due to the health considerations of all involved. April 17, 2020 Dear Storm Families and Staff, Today, Governor J.B. Pritzker announced the end of in-person learning for the 2019-20 school year. This news is disheartening since we had held hope that we could reunite students and teachers in our schools; however, we value and respect the highest priority of keeping all members of the Bureau Valley family safe and healthy as we band together to stop the spread of this virus. As we move forward with the governor’s decision, Bureau Valley schools will continue to use Remote Learning policies and procedures that have been developed and implemented since April 1st. This learning plan will continue through May 21st, though there will be no Remote Learning on the following weekdays: April 27th, May 11th, and May 22nd. In addition to measures for Remote Learning, food services will continue to be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays through May 20th, including on non-Remote Learning days. These meals can be collected from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the same locations in our communities that we’ve been using. The Bureau Valley administrative team knows you likely have many questions and concerns at this time, many of which we also have now. We will continue working hard to determine and communicate solutions that focus on our top priorities: maintaining safety for all, supplying meals for students, and providing meaningful learning opportunities. Pritzker issued an extension of his “Stay-at-Home” order for the entire state, which started Saturday, March 21, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. The order has now been extended through the end of April. This order essentially commands residents to stay in their homes as the officials take measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Residents can still shop for groceries, put gas in their cars, take walks outside, and collect prescriptions from pharmacies. All local roads, including the interstate highways and tollways, will remain open to traffic, as well. Under the governor’s directive, schools will continue to be closed and use Remote Learning through Thursday, April 30th. Schools will tentatively reopen Friday, May 1st unless otherwise mandated by the governor, Illinois State Board of Education, or local health agencies. This mandated closure also extends the canceling of all school activities and events, including sports, meetings, etc. Food services will continue to be available during the school closure. Our District has worked extremely hard to prepare Remote Learning opportunities for the students in order to maintain a continuity of education. Each building is unique; therefore, you will receive or have already received directions on how to access your child’s materials either online or by paper, depending on your preferred method of delivery. Teachers have and will continue to develop learning activities that are engaging and meaningful, not work that may add additional stress for students and families. And, to ensure that these tasks can be accomplished successfully by all students, teachers will be available via email to answer questions related to all coursework. Since we understand that this time may be difficult for some families and will require all to be flexible, we will also have school counselors available to help navigate students and families through these stressful changes; if needed, please contact your school or visit the counseling resources provided on the district’s webpage. Dear Bureau Valley Communities, Earlier today, we were notified that a staff member at Bureau Valley High School has tested positive for COVID-19. Upon receiving that information, I immediately contacted the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Bureau County Health Department, and the Illinois State Board of Education for their guidance. After an investigation, health department officials have indicated that the employee likely contracted the virus after last being on school grounds. As a result, we have been advised that employees and students are considered “low risk” for potentially being exposed to the virus from this employee. Due to health privacy laws, the identity of the employee will not be released. COVID-19 shares many symptoms with more common respiratory diseases. According to the Bureau County Health Department, you should monitor yourself for any signs of illness (fever, cough, or shortness of breath). If you are experiencing any symptoms, you should contact your local health care provider. Bureau Valley is canceling school on Monday, March 16th due to recent developments related to the COVID-19 Virus and the CDC’s recommendations of canceling gatherings with 50 or more people. Our curbside lunch program will begin tomorrow, Monday, March 16th between 10:30 and noon at the designated sites. If you need any supplies from your student’s locker, learning materials or medications, please call your child’s school to set up a time to pick up these items. We will continue to communicate regularly with updates as this situation remains fluid.
Bureau Valley CUSD #340 Members, Since previous correspondences from district administration, Governor J.B. Pritzker has provided further clarification and guidance to Illinois schools. On Saturday, March 14th, the governor declared Act of God days during the state-mandated closure of schools through March 30th; no longer will these days need to be made up at the end of the school year, nor will they be counted as emergency days that count against the number of required days for students’ instruction and teachers’ retirement. And, while these days won’t count as attendance days, the Illinois State Board of Education has declared that instruction is still “expected” on these days, which doesn’t include days already planned for spring break. Bureau Valley staff and administration are committed to keeping students engaged in their learning during this statewide school closure. Therefore, Bureau Valley schools will progress forward with a plan that provides supplemental learning opportunities for all students in the district during this extended closure. In this plan, we encourage parents and students to engage in free, online educational activities and/or supplemental materials provided by the school district. The Illinois State Board of Education has compiled a library of resources at www.isbe.net/keeplearning. Additionally, the Bureau Valley school district has printed resources for distribution and created a webpage with online, educational resources for students and families that can be accessed at https://www.bv340.org/o/bv-cusd/page/supplemental-educational-resources. These learning activities and lessons may be completed on a schedule that is controlled and paced by the students and parents. For instance, if 15 minutes of online Khan Academy practice is desired for an English class, the student (and/or parent) may choose to complete the activity during evening hours as opposed to mandating that it be completed between 9:00-10:00 a.m. This educational plan for supplemental learning will provide Bureau Valley students the opportunity to continue academic learning during this unprecedented closure of Illinois schools. The support and implementation of the plan by all members of the learning community will be necessary, as guided by state mandates, to be successful. With that said, the Bureau Valley administrative team is greatly appreciative of all efforts made to progress forward with student learning. At this point, Bureau Valley schools and school-related activities are expected to reopen on Tuesday, March 31st. However, as the situation develops and other guidelines are communicated, the administration of Bureau Valley schools will provide further updates. Students will be dismissed at 1:00 p.m. and all evening activities will be canceled. In preparation for the impending closure and the E-Learning program, student attendance is beneficial and needed to ensure Chromebooks, books, papers, and other materials can be distributed. Effective Tuesday, March 17th through Monday, March 30th, schools in Bureau Valley School District #340 will be closed, as ordered by the governor due to the emergency declaration in response to COVID-19. The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the Musical shows at Bureau Valley High School at 6:00 pm on March 13th and 14th. The young actors of our school have devoted themselves to producing a challenging musical that presents important questions of judgement and morality. These 15th century characters of Paris portray issues important to consider now in our 21st century homes. Through song, dance, and sword fights, we wonder what it means to be a friend, have a home, and differentiate between right and wrong. Memory is so important to what we do on the stage, we think it natural to support its preservation. All free-will donations will go to support the organization. The annual BV Foundation Drawdown will be Saturday, March 21st at Rediger's Shed in Wyanet. Tickets are $40 for a chance to win $750. It also includes 2 meals. Bureau Valley CUSD #340 has set the week of February 10 - February 14, 2020 for Kindergarten Registration at Bureau Valley Elementary buildings in Walnut and Wyanet. Parents may register their child in the attendance center their child will attend between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on those dates. Children who will be five years old on or before September 1st will be eligible to attend kindergarten in the fall. Children are not required to attend the registration process. Parents will be required to present proof of age (certified copy of birth certificate) at the time of registration. We would like to inform you that the Bureau Valley Manlius Campus went on a medical lockdown for a short time this morning while the Bureau County Sheriff’s K9 unit was in the building. All students remained in their classrooms and teachers continued their instruction. This process is part of an ongoing effort to ensure a safe, drug-free environment, which also includes academic curriculum that discusses healthy habits. We appreciate your support of the process and willingness to reinforce these messages at home.

After monitoring the Princeton man hunt situation, Administration feels it is safe for Bureau Valley Schools to follow normal dismissal procedures today, Tuesday, November 5th. All after school and evening activities will proceed as scheduled.
Bureau Valley will be keeping students inside the remainder of the day while we monitor the search for a wanted man in the Princeton area. BVHS WACC students were escorted to their bus by the School Resource Officer and District Administration. TRAC Music Festival students were also escorted safely to their bus.

The Homecoming Parade is cancelled due to bad weather. The Pep Rally will begin at 6:30pm in the HS Gym.
Due to the sale of the Buda Property, the District has to relocate the current Buda Bus Stop. The School Board voted to approve an agreement with the Village of Buda to use the Younggren Center for our new bus stop. Starting on Monday, September 23, the Buda Bus Stop will be located at 102 W. Main Street (The Younggren Center). All Pick-Up and Drop-Off times will remain the same and our Bus Monitor will be on duty during these times. Buses will be parked along Depot Street. Depot Street will be closed between Main and North Street every day between 7:00am-8:00am and again between 3:00pm-4:00pm. Please do not park between the Younggren Center and the Library as students will be waiting for buses on the sidewalk between these points. If there is inclement weather, students will be allowed to enter the Younggren Center with the Monitor. This morning, August 27, 2019, the school district was made aware of an alleged threat to the school from a student who was not on school grounds. The Bureau County Sheriff's Department was notified immediately. The administration and staff then performed safety protocol steps to ensure the safety of all students and staff in the building. The Sheriff’s department swiftly contained the situation by placing the student into custody. The situation will continue to be monitored by the Sheriff’s department and school administration. The District takes all threats seriously and will continue to investigate any and all allegations to ensure that we provide the safest environment possible for everyone in our district.

Announcement regarding plan for old BVS/BVN Junior High Trophies: As the district prepares to merge our junior highs, we will not be relocating trophies. Any junior high trophy earned by an individual will be given to that individual. Team trophies will been offered to the coaches that coached the team. All trophies left are being given to the athletic boosters and they will develop a plan to share with the public at upcoming fundraisers.
