8th grade students in Mrs. Hoyt's Physical Science classes read about Paddling that Pumpkin in their SuperSTEM Scholastic magazine. After learning about how people create boats out of massive pumpkins, the students were able to create their own design and construct a pumpkin boat that a 12" action figure would fit into and float in water. A huge THANK YOU to Sheri and Ryan Litherland for donating the pumpkins to allow all the students to participate in this activity. We greatly appreciate your generosity!!!

4th grade has been learning about the science of sound. This week, students made telephones with cups and string to see the connection between sounds and vibration 👂📞 Some groups modified their cup phones by using different types of string, adding an extra cup, or trying a longer string to talk from further distances!

🏈💙 8th Grade Football Night 🧡⚡️

Last night we celebrated our 8th graders and their dedication to the Storm football program! Thank you to our players, families, coaches, and fans for your support and commitment — your hard work and Storm pride have been incredible to watch.

While the game didn’t end the way we hoped, falling 31–14, we are proud of the effort, teamwork, and resilience our athletes showed on the field. 💪

This group has made a lasting impact on our program, and we can’t wait to see all they accomplish in the future!

Sixth grade Earth Science students have learned that mineral identification should not be based on a single characteristic. Today, they worked to identify five unknown minerals - talc, gypsum, pyroxene, olivine, and fluorite - using the whole suite of physical and chemical properties: luster, streak, Mohs hardness, magnetism, reactivity with acid, cleavage, fracture, color, odor, and texture.

Today, we celebrated our students' quarter one successes with an incentive. JH students earned the incentive with good behavior, grades, and attendance. The students enjoyed an afternoon outside at Zearing Park and an apple cider donut. Great work to all the students who earned the incentive!

Earth Science students are working to identify different minerals, this time using density. Density is more useful than other properties (such as luster, streak, and hardness) because it is quantitative and unique to each mineral.

Sixth grade Earth Science students are learning to use physical and chemical properties to identify minerals. The way a mineral breaks (cleavage or fracture), in addition to its color, crystal shape, streak, and luster can be used to make the determination.

In this activity, different mineral samples were observed under magnification to determine whether they exhibit fracture, conchoidal fracture, or cleavage. If the mineral displayed cleavage, the number of cleavage planes was specified.

🚌✨ Our 7th graders had an amazing day on their field trip! They traveled to see “Edgar Allan Poe’s Twisted Tales Ballet,” where classic stories like The Tell-Tale Heart and The Raven came to life through music and movement. 🎭📚🩰

To top it off, the group made a sweet stop at Whitey’s Ice Cream for a treat before heading home! 🍦😋

What a fun and memorable day of learning, art, and a little dessert!
